Fourth grade is in the middle of unit 7 in math. This unit is working more with fractions, line plots, and decimals. Since this week is spring break, we took Monday and Tuesday to review our unit concepts. On Monday we built boats out of tin foil and filled the boat with pennies until it sank. When our boat sank, we counted the number of pennies it took to sink our boat. We had a lot of fun doing this! Once we were done testing our boats, we plotted our numbers on a line plot. On Tuesday we played jeopardy to review our concepts, and made a fraction flower! I hope everyone has a safe and warm spring break!

We have just finished up our fractions unit in math and we made self portrait mosaics today to strengthen our understanding of fractions! The students had to make a mosaic of themselves and then find the fractions of the colors they used. They really enjoyed doing this! After our project, we also played a little review game to practice for our test! Also in fourth grade, we worked on synonyms and antonyms today! To show our understanding we put together synonym and antonym puzzles. Fourth graders worked together to put the pieces in to correct order! This activity not only showed me what they learned, but also helped build some teamwork in the classroom! Yesterday third and fourth grade used a website called gonoodle.com for gym! We were not able to go to the community center, so we improvised and exercised in the classroom! On gonoodle.com, the kids were able to dance, run in place, do Zumba, and even some yoga! We all had a blast! Catholic School's Week has come to an end. We had a blast this week! Everyone did a great job with their dress up days and participation in the school events. Last week we really enjoyed the Evergreen Theater performance of "A Little Bit of Magic". We also participated in a Minute to Win It Contest with the whole school. Each class had a different task to complete. This year, Caleb and Garrett were the final contestants. They had to balance six dice on the end of a Popsicle stick, with the Popsicle stick in their mouth. We really enjoyed trying to do this in a minute. This week we also ended our measurement unit in math. To review our concepts we have learned throughout the unit, we played a game of jeopardy. The students loved this review activity!
Last week we finished up our land and water unit for science. The last project the students had to do with this unit is build a dam. They used all the knowledge the learned about dams from researching a dam, to construct one themselves. Everyone was very creative in building their dam. We had fun testing out everyone's dam. 4th grade started their measurement unit in math today! To practice our measuring skills, we had a measuring scavenger hunt. The students had to first read a riddle and think about what they were suppose to measure. After they figured out what they had to measure, they went and measured that object in the classroom! They had so much fun with this! Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break. We have had a great week of getting back into our routines after Christmas break. In Reading, we do daily 5 rotations. This week the fourth graders have no problem getting back into the swing of things. Before Christmas we started writing our own "Choose your own adventure books" and this week we are enjoying reading them in our read to self time! We have also been using parts of speech magnets to create sentences, and continuing to enjoy listening to book on our playaways. Like our reading time, we also do centers in math. We are almost done with unit 4. In unit 4 we have been working on expressions, equations, prime and composite numbers. To help us to better understand these concepts, we have been doing some fun activities in our centers. We have been using megamath, which is a program that is part of our math series. We have also been playing expression and equation jenga, expression go fish, and prime number war with cards. We have just recently ended our animal studies unit, and started our next science unit called land and water. In this unit we are learning about the water cycle, how streams are formed, and the different types of streams. We are really enjoying this hands on unit! We enjoy watching how a stream is formed, even if we get a little messy. :) I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Our Christmas concert is right around the corner! We have been practicing our songs and we have been doing a wonderful job on them! We cannot wait to sing for everyone and see all of our families at the concert. Please remember to wear dress clothes. Kaki pants or dress pants are fine, and girls can wear dresses as well. Please no jeans. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. For our concert we also have made adorable candles to hold! They have turned out awesome! I cannot wait to see how they will look when we are singing! Fourth grade is really enjoying their animal studies unit! We have just finished up learning all about the African Dwarf Frogs. We observed their behaviors and habitats. We learned all about how they interact with each other and how they survive. We are currently studying about Fiddler Crabs. We love observing them every day and seeing how they survive in their habitat! We are doing an excellent job taking care of our classroom pets, I couldn't be more proud of how they treat their animals!
In other news, math is going wonderful! We are finishing up our unit on division and we are still rocking remainders! We have been practicing our division by playing division games like Chutes and Ladders, Gobble it Up, and Division power towers. Ask your child about all the fun games we play to enhance our understanding of division! The cold weather is definitely setting in! Please remember to send your child with the proper clothing! This week we had one indoor recess due to the cold and it was so great to see us playing together so nicely! This week for indoor recess we really enjoyed playing Heads Up on the iPad! |
